THE WAY OF THE MARTIAL ARTS

Wu Tao Kwan means, 'The Way of the Martial Arts'. Which is a pretty
good way of describing this Chinese Martial Arts School!
Unlike so many other schools, Wu Tao Kwan does not practice one particular
system (style). Rather, two distinct systems have been integrated
into one school. When considering that there are only two known systems
(hard and soft), it's not surprising that this is a very popular school.
Popular, in that it caters for all-comers. Whether you are a big strong
man, or a small petite woman, everybody can benefit from this unique
Chinese Martial Arts School.
1,000 YEARS OF HISTORY
The two systems practiced within the school can be traced back over
a thousand years to the world famous Shaolin (Sil Lum) Temple in Hunan
province, China. There is the Choy Li Fut (soft style) system that
was developed by Grandmaster Chan Heung. And there is the Chang Kuen
(long-fist hard style) system that is predominantly Northern Chinese
in its origins.
The Choy Li Fut and Chang Kuen systems were integrated into one school
in 1980. The Choy Li Fut system coming from Chinese Grandmaster, Patrick
Chang Law, and the Chang Kuen system coming from Black Belt, 5th Dan
Sifu (teacher), Judd Whitelaw. Albeit Patrick and Judd have now retired
from public teaching, the school remains in its original Chinese traditional
format
TRUE CHINESE TRADITION
In true Chinese tradition, the Wu Tao Kwan school was handed down
from Father to Son. Mr Whitelaw's second-son, Tim, now runs the school
as its 'Chief Instructor'.
Trained by both, his Father (Judd Whitelaw) and his Fathers Master
(Grandmaster Patrick Chang Law), Tim maintains the heritage, practices
and tenets of the Ancient Chinese Masters. However, that is not to
say that Wu Tao Kwan does not have a modern approach!
ACCOUNTABLE
As with all 'respected' Martial Arts Schools, Wu Tao Kwan is accountable
to the British Governing Body - The Amateur Martial Arts Association.
Masters and Students alike, are all licensed, have full insurances
and, are subject to inspection from the AMA at any time.
NOT A BUSINESS
Nobody in the school makes a living from it. This means that classes
and training are affordable to most people - no exorbitant prices
here! An average class runs for approximately two hours and costs
only £4.00. Membership and insurances cost only £35.00
for the first year, and only £30.00 per year thereafter. Gradings
(modern approach) are only £9.00, and all equipment can be purchased
via your club.
